Why Choose Ackworth
Ackworth is a lively and forward-thinking co-educational school. We aim to build strong individuals who think creatively and act responsibly. Our students are encouraged to express themselves confidently, embodying Quaker values by speaking respectfully. Nestled in the scenic West Yorkshire countryside, we provide diverse education from nursery to sixth form for both day pupils and boarders.
Wrap around care
To help support busy family lives, we offer an extended day at no extra charge. For our Junior School, Coram House, care is available from 7:45 am to 6:00 pm. In Senior School, pupils can come to school for 7:30 am and remain until 8:00 pm. Breakfast and tea are provided, and pupils benefit from after school activities, daily supervised prep sessions and additional time with friends.
Flexi-boarding/Boarding
At Ackworth, we’re flexible about boarding to meet the needs of busy parents and students. Some go home only for the school holidays, while others head home most weekends. Some students board for their whole time at Ackworth, and others might board for just a year or two. It is even possible for pupils to board just for single nights as required. In our boarding house, boys and girls live together, but have separate sleeping areas. Our main goal is to make it feel like a ‘home from home’ where boarders can relax, feel safe, and enjoy each other’s company. It’s a place to unwind or work quietly, and where they can get support if they have any concerns or worries.
Quaker Values
Quaker values are the cornerstone of daily life at Ackworth School, with a focus on acceptance and quiet reflection. The school is committed to fostering an atmosphere of inherent respect for others and a dedication to unwavering honesty which contributes to a calm and friendly environment. Ackworth School encourages all our pupils, (the majority from non-Quaker families), to embrace creativity, ethical decision-making, and a sense of responsibility. By instilling these values, the school not only imparts academic knowledge but also nurtures individuals who are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the world with a compassionate and principled approach.
Wellbeing
We really care about making sure our pupils feel good and we believe that when children are happy, they do well in everything. We pay close attention to each child and what they need to be their best. We make sure everyone treats each other with kindness and fairness, following the Quaker way. We listen to what our pupils have to say, and their ideas are important to us. This helps us make choices that are good for everyone. We also teach pupils to be honest and treat everyone the same way, creating a friendly and equal place for everyone to learn and grow.
After-School Activities
A full academic, co-curricular and extracurricular calendar with a vast choice of clubs and societies is offered at lunchtime and after school. Year 10 and 11 pupils can take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze and silver award, while the gold award is completed in the Sixth Form. The sports academies at Ackworth School provide talented students with the opportunity to train under top-notch coaches in personalized programs. Many academy participants go on to compete at county, national and even international levels.
Meals
We believe good nutrition is crucial for young minds to thrive. Our dedicated catering team ensures each meal is nutritious, balanced, and delicious, using fresh, local ingredients. Our menus focus on whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. We also offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options at every meal, accommodating various dietary needs. Our team is always happy to work with students to meet their specific dietary preferences and restrictions. Breakfast, dinner, and tea is provided for all boarders. Day pupils can book to have breakfast and tea if they are using our wrap-around care facility or flexi-boarding.
